Best Pet-Friendly Getaways Near New York City

If you are comparing pet friendly getaways near NYC, start with Ellenville and the Shawangunk Ridge. You can hike, stay near town, and choose a rental that fits your pet and your group. The area also works when you compare pet friendly getaways near New York City or dog friendly getaways near NYC. Focus on the pet policy, yard setup, sleeping space, and how you plan to spend the weekend.

I’m Chef Marcus Guiliano, one of the hosts behind Hudson Valley Guest Houses and an Ellenville hospitality operator. Jamie and I have worked in the community since 2003. From hosting guests, we know that a pet policy can vary from one rental to the next.

What are the best pet-friendly weekend getaways near NYC?

For travelers who want hiking, town access, and a choice of rentals, pet friendly getaways near NYC should make the trip easy before and after you head outside. Ellenville and the Shawangunk Ridge offer that mix. You can stay near the village, reach trail areas by car, and choose between tiny homes and houses. The area also fits pet friendly weekend getaways near NYC. New Paltz and Gardiner, Woodstock and the Catskills, Beacon and Cold Spring, and the Delaware Water Gap or Poconos may suit trips with different priorities.

Ellenville and the Shawangunks: Trail Access and Town Convenience

Ellenville gives you access to the Shawangunk Ridge without putting you far from groceries, restaurants, and other trip basics.

Nearby options include Sam’s Point, Minnewaska State Park, Lundy, and Lippman Park. If Sam’s Point is part of your plans, see my guide to places to stay near Sam’s Point Preserve. It compares Ellenville, Cragsmoor, and nearby lodging bases.

Dogs can visit the Sam’s Point Area on a leash no longer than six feet and under the owner’s control. New York State Parks currently requires weekend and holiday parking reservations from April 15 through November 15. Check the Sam’s Point Area rules and access information before your trip because parking, trail conditions, and seasonal restrictions can change.

Dogs can also visit Minnewaska under its pet policy, with restrictions in some areas and during some activities. Check the Minnewaska State Park information for the rules that apply to the part of the park you plan to use.

Lippman Park can work when you want a walk closer to town. Lundy offers a woodland route. Carry water, clean up after your dog, check for ticks, and keep wildlife in mind.

If this is your first trip to the area, my guide to where to stay in Ellenville can help you compare a village base with lodging outside town.

For Couples With Dogs: Tiny Homes and Hot Tubs

Couples often want a bed, room to take the dog outside, and space away from hotel traffic. Among pet friendly getaways near NYC, a tiny home can meet those needs while keeping the trip simple.

Our Breezy Lawn property on Oak Ridge Road includes three freestanding tiny homes that accept pets. The Catskill Tiny Home and Country Tiny Home are approximately 550 square feet. The Cove is approximately 600 square feet and has a more open layout.

Each cabin includes a king bed, a hot tub reserved for that unit, a kitchenette, grill, Wi-Fi, television, climate control, and coffee service. Guests can also use the lawns, open space, and a short woodland trail on the property.

Travelers searching pet friendly Hudson Valley getaways or pet friendly vacation rentals Hudson Valley should verify the terms for the exact unit they plan to book. The same applies to dog friendly cabins Hudson Valley and pet friendly vacation rentals Ellenville NY. Check the pet rules, whether a yard is shared, and whether an amenity belongs to one rental or several.

Each Breezy Lawn unit has its own hot tub. That distinction matters when you compare Hudson Valley tiny homes with private hot tubs because listing language can describe access in different ways.

Breezy Lawn sits on approximately 18 acres. Downtown Ellenville is a little over a mile and a half away, and Sam’s Point is roughly a 12- to 15-minute drive under normal conditions. You can spend time outside without turning a grocery stop or dinner plan into a long drive.

The Cove is an option if you want the larger of the three tiny-home layouts. Confirm the current pet terms for the unit before booking.

For Families and Groups: Full Houses

A tiny home will not fit every trip. Families and groups may need separate bedrooms, a kitchen, more seating, and room for people to follow different schedules.

Hudson Valley Guest Houses also offers homes in Ellenville that accept pets. One four-bedroom option sleeps up to eight and includes a hot tub, plus a bedroom and bathroom on the main floor. A three-bedroom option sleeps six to seven, has two bathrooms, a double lot, and a covered hot-tub area.

A house can make meals and downtime easier when one person stays in with a pet while others go out. The four-bedroom Ellenville home is a useful comparison when a tiny home does not have enough sleeping space.

Do not assume that a lawn is a secure dog enclosure. Fencing and gates can differ by property and can change over time. Ask about the setup for the exact home if containment affects your booking decision.

Other Getaway Areas Near New York City

Ellenville is my home base, but other areas can make sense depending on the trip.

New Paltz and Gardiner

New Paltz and Gardiner work when you want the northern side of Minnewaska, the Mohonk area, restaurants, and a busier town setting. They may be less convenient when Sam’s Point or Ellenville is the main destination because the Minnewaska and Sam’s Point entrances serve different parts of the park.

Woodstock and the Catskills

Woodstock, Phoenicia, and the Catskills work for travelers who want mountain scenery, shops, and hiking. Compare drive time with the trail or town you actually plan to visit.

Beacon and Cold Spring

Beacon and Cold Spring suit travelers who value Metro-North access, galleries, river towns, and streets that are easy to explore on foot. They may be a weaker fit when you want a house with acreage or quick access to the southern Shawangunks.

Delaware Water Gap and the Poconos

The Delaware Water Gap and Poconos offer cabin stays and outdoor activities. Compare drive time, pet terms, amenity access, and your planned activities before choosing them over the Hudson Valley.

How can I find vacation rentals that allow pets near New York City?

Start with the pet policy for the exact rental. Confirm fees, the number of pets accepted, size or breed rules, furniture rules, and whether a pet can stay alone. Then check the yard or lawn setup and whether amenities are assigned to your unit or shared. If a listing is unclear, ask the host before paying.

A Booking Checklist for Traveling With Pets

When comparing pet friendly getaways near NYC, use the same questions for each rental:

  • Is there a pet fee, and when is it collected?
  • How many pets can stay in this unit?
  • Are there size, breed, or other restrictions?
  • Is the yard or lawn fenced, partly fenced, open, or shared?
  • Can pets use the furniture, and are covers expected?
  • Can a pet stay alone inside?
  • Are waste bags, bowls, towels, or other supplies provided?
  • Which parks, trails, restaurants, and services are nearby?
  • If there is a hot tub, is it assigned to the rental or shared?

At Hudson Valley Guest Houses, guests should list pets when booking or tell the host before arrival. Follow the rules for the property, keep control of pets in shared areas, clean up waste, and take responsibility for pet-related damage. Because policies can change, use the terms attached to your reservation as the final source.

Dining With Your Dog in Ellenville

Aroma Thyme Bistro has outdoor seating that may work for guests with dogs when weather, staffing, and service conditions support outdoor dining. Call ahead to check whether the outdoor area is available that day.

Ellenville also makes it possible to pick up food, groceries, or supplies without driving back toward a highway corridor. That can help when you are coordinating meals, walks, and check-in times with a pet.

How Local Hosts Help

A host who knows the area can answer questions before arrival. I can help guests compare property layouts, pet needs, mobility needs, and weekend plans. Jamie and I can also answer questions about dining and the area when needed.

The goal is not to plan every minute. It is to explain what a listing means in practice, compare a tiny home with a house, and help you avoid a property that does not match your trip.

Accessibility and Property Fit

Pet needs are only one part of the booking decision. Stairs, bathroom access, parking, and terrain can matter too.

The Cove has a step-free approach and a zero-threshold shower, although the property includes slopes outdoors. One Ellenville house has a bedroom and bathroom on the main floor, which can reduce stair use once inside. These details are not an accessibility guarantee. If mobility matters, ask about the entry route, layout, bathroom, parking, and terrain before booking.

The same rule applies to pets: choose from the actual layout and policy, not only the amenity list.

Plan Your Hudson Valley Getaway

A stay works best when the property fits both the people and the pets traveling. A tiny home may suit two people who plan to hike and relax after the trail. A house may work better when several people need bedrooms, a kitchen, and room to spread out.

Ellenville combines lodging choices with access to the Shawangunks and services in town. When you compare pet friendly getaways near NYC, check the pet policy, layout, yard setup, mobility needs, and location before booking.
